So I use WooCommerce a lot.. those who read this site regularly will know that. I’ve been selling stuff for a long time via my own websites and also facilitating other people selling things via their own sites. One thing that I have never liked is the email notification of sale. I know it’s standard practice but I get a LOT of email and having sale notifications dumped in with the latest newsletters and spam for the day makes things hard to follow at times.
A friend of mine (Hi Gordon) introduced me to a service called Pushover a few years ago. For the most part it’s free which is music to people’s ears I know. you get something like 7500 notifications a month for nothing although I think each device you want to be notified costs $5 (one time fee!). A small price to pay considering I set this up a couple of years ago and have since forgotten about the financials whilst continuously getting handy ‘text like’ notifications to my phone whenever something happens.
For the programmers among you there is a simple cURL script you can use to do the sending.. it’s essentially an API key for the ‘application’ (what they call a named service to send against) and a user key (your own personal key for your Pushover account). You can send text, links, icons etc.. it’s quite versatile… did I mention it was free!
I’ve written a collection of scripts for vendor based websites so that users who sell via a marketplace type website can be notified when they sell stuff but for the sake of this post I’ve included a simpler example which is for WooCommerce… when anything at all is sold you will get a notification to your phone (or phones) detailing what it was that sold, how many of them and how much you made.
It’s a set and forget script so simply install the plugin on your WP/Woo site, enter your app key and user key into the simple settings page and then have a brew whilst waiting for the phone to start pinging.
